About
Aloha y'all
I'm Sam Torres, better known online as The SEO Mermaid.

I’ve spent over 15 years in SEO, mostly agency side and recently moving in-house. Somewhere along the way I turned into a bit of a hybrid: part developer, part data architect, part tech SEO, all in service of the same question, which is how do search engines and AI systems actually understand what a site is trying to say.
What I work on
Because I blend different disciplines, it’s allowed me to work on a myriad of types of work - though usually all focusing on SEO and digital marketing applications. In the communities I’m active in, you’ll usually find me discussing JavaScript rendering, structured data, machine learning, international SEO and hreflang, and enterprise migrations.
How I think about it
People want authentic experiences, so that’s what search engines and AI platforms are looking to surface and reward. I think the role (or more appropriately, one of the roles) of a good tech SEO is to bridge the communication between the brand and bots to ensure that the right things are being positioned as priority and easily comprehendable.
I also recognize that for many brands, you may be working with years worth of tech debt or competing business needs/priorities. This means adopting a flexible approach to every task, working toward the feasible best case, instead of always stubbornly insisting on “best practice”.
Communities
I am a proud and active member of various SEO Slack communities. These are honestly the best place to find and strike up a conversation with me.
- Women in Tech SEO: We discuss and support so much more than just tech SEO - from content to analytics to paid to design, as well as work/life balance, mental health, healthy workplaces, etc. So if you identify as female or non-binary, please consider joining today. It’s completely free!
- SEO Community: Founded by Noah Lerner who is now supported by a swath of wonderful people, this is absolutely a place to learn and grow in your SEO and digital marketing career. One of my favorite things about this space is the community rule that you can’t start questions with phrases like “this may be dumb” or “I should probably already know this”, and instead encourages members to use the phrase “make me smarter”. The community is free, with an option for a paid tier to gain access to office hours with the mods, a t-shirt and other cool stuff.
